How are homeopathy remedies made?

Homeopathy remedies are derived from plant, animal and mineral extracts and diluted in varying degrees to avoid negative side-effects. Paradoxically, the remedies are more effective the more diluted they are. Because of this, precision is key in the art of homeopathy.

Remedies which come from soluble sources, such as animal or plant extracts, are dissolved in alcohol and water solutions that are comprised of about 90 percent alcohol and 10 percent distilled water. The ratio varies in each case.

After it is mixed, the solution often stands for two to four week and is shaken vigorously once in a while. Then it is strained through a press to produce the final product. This resulting liquid is known as the homeopathy mother tincture or just tincture. It is then ready to use on patients.

The way homeopathy deals with insoluble substances

In the case of insoluble substances, such as gold, calcium carbonate and graphites, they are transformed into soluble products that can be used in the same way that soluble substances are. During this process the insoluble substances are ground continuously until they become soluble.

This process is known as trituration. These substances are then diluted and used in the same way as naturally soluble substances. The substances used in homeopathy to cure like diseases can come from a variety of sources, though flower, herb and plant remedies are often the most popular.

While 70 percent of homeopathy remedies are made from herbs, the formulas with the deepest acting effect often come from mineral sources. Also the weakest or most diluted formulas are also known to be the most powerful.

Sources of homeopathy remedies

"Homeopathic medicines may be produced from healing substances (marigold flowers), neutral substances (table salt), or highly toxic substances (arsenic). Yet through the unique homeopathic process, they all become safe, deep acting medicines."

"In fact homeopathy remedies made from poisonous or toxic material have effects opposite from the original substance. For example, arsenic causes diarrhea but homeopathic Arsenicum can cure this condition."

"Nosodes are remedies made from bacteria or other disease substances. Like other homeopathic medicines they are prescribed based on their symptom picture, not just for treatment of bacterial or viral infections."

"Sarcodes are homeopathic medicines made from specific healthy organs or tissues. Remedies may also be prepared from nonmaterial sources, such as moonlight, musical frequencies, electricity, or magnetic fields. The possibilities are endless." Source: (Herbs2000.com)

The controversial side of homeopathy

One of the most controversial aspects of homeopathy is the infinitesimal dose or the micro dose. This unique contribution of homeopathy to the medical field has been received with mixed feelings as its basic principle is based on a paradox.

While traditional medicine is based in the theory that cures should be opposites of the condition, homeopathy is based in the laws of similars. For example, in a patient with insomnia, homeopathy prescribes a minute dose of a substance, such as coffee, which in large doses causes sleeplessness in most people.

Homeopathy remedy potencies

Generally fresh plants are made into alcoholic extracts, or mother tinctures. Minerals or metals undergo trituration and milk sugar is added as the diluting agent to make them soluble. "Remedies are then made by a series of dilutions, either on the scale of 1 part of original substance to 9 parts of alcohol, or 1 part to 99."

"This creates either the decimal scale (x), or the centesimal scale (c). The other component of the remedy-making process is succussion, whereby the medicine is shaken vigorously between each dilution. Substances that have undergone these successive steps are termed potencies or dilutions. Potencies are named according to the number of times they have been diluted and shaken up in the x or c scale (e.g. 6x, 30c, 200c)."

No matter how its packaged homeopathy is an energy medicine

"The dynamized remedies are finally put into a carrier substance (usually sugar pellets but sometimes tablets, tiny granules, or liquid) and packaged in impervious bottles or tubes. Chemically, remedies beyond the 12c or 24x strength contain no more atoms or molecules of the original substance. They are purely energy medicine. The whole process releases the energetic blueprint of the substance and makes it available as a healing medicine." Source: (Herbs200.com)

According to the paradox of homeopathy, the less of the original substance that is contained in the tincture, the deeper the effect. The more energetic and less material a tincture is and the higher the number of dilutions, the more powerful it becomes.

Reactions to homeopathy

Even the homeopathy remedies made from metals and toxic substances have no inherent toxicity and therefore, unlike most conventional remedies, no side effects. However, this doesn't mean that reactions to homeopathy remedies can't sometimes be intense.

Usually these sorts of reactions are positive because they are a natural part of the healing process. Unpleasant symptoms are sometimes inevitable to restore a patient's health. These strong reactions are why it is often advisable to take homeopathic remedies only under the care of a qualified practitioner of homeopathy.

The duration of homeopathy remedies

Homeopathy remedies with the shortest duration should be used in acute diseases and seldom used in chronic diseases. They can very seldom be used as intercurrents in some chronic diseases.

Homeopathy remedies with intermediate duration can be used in acute diseases as well as in chronic diseases. Exceptions are acute diseases with very rapid/violent development and chronic diseases that have existed for a very long time and therefore are deeply rooted.

"Remedies with long duration should not be repeated (or its action disturbed by giving a different remedy), even when a second or third repetition of the primary effect develops. The remedies with the longest duration can have an effect for several months." http://www.curantur.de/English/Articles/Duration/duration.html
